God’s interruptions in our life are actually invitations to something better!
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
God’s interruptions in our life are actually invitations to something better!
An invitation to enjoy favored status
Luke 1:28-30 NLT
Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings,[a] favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!
An invitation to experience the impossible
Luke 1:31-35,37 NASB
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God…For nothing will be impossible with God.”
An invitation to let go
Luke 1:38 NLT
Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
Obedience is your responsibility, the Outcome is God’s responsibility!
What is God asking you to do or believe?
Fear often controls our lives in negative ways:
- We fear what people will say or think about us…our fear tells us to just fit in
- We fear being hurt or betrayed again…our fear tells us to disengage, build a bubble, stay on the couch in your Snuggie
- We fear failing…our fear tells us only try so hard or better yet, don’t try at all
- We see someone walking towards us and we fear where the conversation might go…our fear drives us to duck into a storefront, look the other way, get a fake phone call…
But our fear also affects us in our relationship with God. We fear what God might ask us to do, or what God’s plan for my life is, so we don’t fully open ourselves us to him…
- Don’t ever tell God where you don’t want to go…
- Afraid he’s going to ask us to give up something
- He’s gong to force us to marry someone ugly!
Fear is the opposite of faith: Fear says “What If” when Faith says, “What’s Next”!
Now, I don’t want you to think that I’m preaching at you from some high point of pomposity, as if I’ve got it all together and I don’t have any fear!
- Fearful that my ideas are going to flop and everybody is going to know it’s my fault
- Fearful that I may not really make any significant impact or leave a legacy
- Fearful that the Patriots are going to win another Superbowl
- Hey, I’ve got 2 daughters, I’m fearful of every guy….which is why my strategy is to make them terrified of me first!
Listen to this though, fear is not from God!
We are so afraid of God’s plan and what God might ask us to do, that we just avoid him all together at times. We fear his interruptions in our life, that disrupt what we want to do, that make us uncomfortable, that make us do things we don’t want…but stop for a moment…power (God is all powerful/control), love (God loves us unconditionally and wants what is best for us), sound mind (be rational not emotional and remember the past)…
