Our songs and our singing have purpose and meaning!

Our songs and our singing have purpose and meaning!

Singing isn’t Optional

Psalm 96:1-3 NIV
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

Singing Celebrates God’s Greatness

Psalm 96:4-6 NLT
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be feared above all gods. The gods of other nations are mere idols, but the Lord made the heavens! Honor and majesty surround him; strength and beauty fill his sanctuary.

Isaiah 55:12 NIV
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Singing Testifies to Those Listening

Psalm 96:9-13a NLT
Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor. Let all the earth tremble before him. Tell all the nations, “The Lord reigns!”  The world stands firm and cannot be shaken. He will judge all peoples fairly. Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice! Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy! Let the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he is coming!

Here’s the thing – we lie to ourselves and tell ourselves that if we don’t feel it, it’s inauthentic. That is COMPLETELY untrue. God is worthy of praise and worship no matter how we feel, or what we feel about it. Basing worship on our feelings centers the worship squarely on us, and that’s the exact opposite of where the center should be…

What it all boils down to is a word that we view as one of the few remaining dirty words: Obedience. Think of it like going into battle [which it actually is, much more than we realize] – there may be times when you’re brave, but you’re much more likely to be scared out of your wits, or sick to your stomach, etc… But you go anyway, because you know what’s on the line. You muster up the courage you have and go do it anyway.

That’s not being fake, that’s LIFE – showing joy for the mercy and love of God, not necessarily because we feel it but because we KNOW IT’S TRUE!

Let me ask you a question, do you believe God is great? Singing is one of God’s preferred and primary methods of proclaiming his greatness.

When you saw that what was your response? Did you sit there quietly and think to yourself, that was nice…Or did you erupt with shouting waking every napping being up in your home?

We should have the same response, only magnified, every time we catch a glimpse of God’s greatness! When we see a sunrise/sunset!

  • When we experience an answered prayer
  • When we are set free from a habitual sin
  • When we watch someone’s life transformed

Even creation celebrates God’s greatness…

I wonder if our lack of singing has more to do with our uncomfortableness in celebrating God for fear of what people might think, then our awkwardness of carrying a tune?

I think we need to come to a realization, we need to embrace this truth, that there is nothing greater in this world that we should celebrate louder, harder, or with more enthusiasm than the greatness of God!!!

“Dignified” – Worship and singing is a deeply personal thing…baloney!

David literally says to his wife…I will be even more undignified than this!
