Perfectly planned out lives, tend to perfectly plan out God!

Matthew 4:18-20 NASB
Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

Mark 10:17,21-22 NLT
As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”…Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Perfectly planned out lives, tend to perfectly plan out God!

Planned Spontaneity:

The intentional exercise of your ability to respond to immediate circumstances in the present moment

3 Reason We Need to be Spontaneous:

To remember we are not in control

Proverbs 16:9 NLT
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

To keep us flexible to the Spirit’s leading

John 3:8 NASB
The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.

To break out of our bias and traditions

Acts 10:19-21,28
While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself.” Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?” …And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.

All throughout the pages of the Bible the biggest splashes, the most significant waves came out of spontaneous responses, not planned agendas:

  • Noah willing to build an ark
  • Abram willing to leave his homeland
  • Jonathon attacking the Philistine outpost with just he and his servant
  • David taking on Goliath
  • Peter walking on water

Unfortunately I find myself, and maybe you do to, looking far too much like the rich young man, and not enough like Peter and Andrew. In our over scheduled, hyper optimized, lifehack filled lives there is no room for spontaneous responses. We’ve often become so efficient that we look more like machines than humans…BIG PROBLEM

This whole series has been building on each other from week to week.

  • Week 1, talked about no regrets, means you’ve got to get things right first, regret-free living is only possible through Jesus Christ
  • Week 2, talked about the fact that God made you on purpose with a purpose, and if you don’t ever discover what that is you’ll never really be able to find fulfillment, now that may make some waves in your world, but that’s a good thing.
  • Last week, shared with you the consequences of not learning how to say no to those things that don’t fit your purpose/gifting so you can say yes to the things God’s called you to, because making waves means learning how to say no.
  • All of those things working together allows us to do what we are talking about today. If we’ve accepted and are following Jesus, we can begin to discover our purpose, which then helps us know what to say no to and what we should be saying yes to, which frees up our life and our energy to be able to quickly/spontaneously respond to God!

Monstrous difference between Spontaneity and Irresponsibility or Impulsiveness
