Baptism isn’t where you ‘Find Jesus’, it’s what you do once Jesus has found you!

Malachi 1:10 NLT
“How I wish one of you would shut the Temple doors so that these worthless sacrifices could not be offered! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “and I will not accept your offerings.”

Luke 3:2-3 NLT
Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

Demonstrate His Obedience

Matthew 3:13-15 NLT
Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?” But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

Matthew 28:19-20 NLT
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Reveal His Identity

Matthew 3:16-18 NLT
After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

Galatians 3:27-28 NIV
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 10:32-33 NLT
Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.

Commit to His Purpose

Luke 4:1-2 NLT
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

Luke 9:23 NLT
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.

Found in all 4, Matt, Mar, Luk, Joh…It marks the beginning of Jesus earthly ministry and the launch of his journey to the Cross. It’s when Jesus went down to the Jordan River and was baptized by John the Baptist. When you first read it, it’s pretty confusing as to why Jesus does this because, no matter what you believe about baptism, Jesus had no reason to need to be baptized…He had no sin…He didn’t need to make major changes…He had nothing to repent from. So why did Jesus choose to get baptized? My hope is to not only show you why Jesus did it, by why you should as well if you have accepted Jesus Christ.

Now baptism, especially in this area, can be kind of confusing, because some people believe that baptism is what saves you, or at least it’s part of the process of salvation. But, Jesus taught that salvation is found in nothing else but by believing and accepting what He did on the cross. You don’t ‘find Jesus’ when you’re baptized.

Jesus wants commitment from us, our out front, in public, full-throated commitment to him…
