Who’s your idol?

Daniel 1: 1, 5-6 1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”

I know I don’t have an image or idol of gold in my closet but it’s pretty safe to say I have had other idols in my life. People, friendships, fashion, jewelry, food, sports, career…Take your pick any of these can become an idol in ones life. I’m sure there are many more that I didn’t think to list.

Now we may not get thrown into the fiery furnace if we don’t bow down but we may loose a valuable relationship, promotion, label of how we want others to think of us, deep guilt that hangs on…I won’t even try to pick which one is your fiery furnace.

What image building are you doing? Image building is when we attempt to make an impression that is bigger than who we really are. (B. Moore-Daniel) It’s a scary subject matter to think about. No Christian wants to believe that they have put some image/idol before God. But, we have to stop and check what is going on in our hearts. What are the motives behind what we do, where we go, and what comes out of our mouths. Believe it or not others can usually see what our idols are just by watching our behavior, sometimes before we even realize it.(how embarrassing is that!)
Don’t get caught by surprise. Make a commitment to check who, or what, is first in your life on a regular basis.
