The Hardest Step

In any journey the hardest and most difficult step is always the first step.  When it’s a journey of change or alteration it can be even harder and sometimes it might even feel impossible.

Peter, the great apostle, had many ups and downs, but I think the greatest and most significant moment in his life took place on the very waters that he had spent his life fishing.  You see, Jesus had called Peter away from his commercial fishing business to become a full-time, yet unpaid, disciple.

One night Jesus sent the disciples to cross over a body of water, the Sea of Galilee, and he said he would meet them on the other side in the morning.  But, in the midst of the night a terrifying storm arose and these men where so frightened they believed that this trip would cost them their very lives.  It was at this moment that Jesus came walking by them, yes “walking”.  The disciples saw him and shrieked for they thought it was the Ghost of Galilee come to take their souls to the deep.  Jesus called out and told them to not be afraid, to which Peter asked one of the most remarkable questions ever posed…

“Lord, if it‘s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” – Matthew 14:28

Can you imagine what that first step must have been like?  To have your feet touch the wet cool water, and then to realize that it was supporting your full body weight; that in that very moment you were defying the very laws of nature with the divine assistance of God in the flesh!

Unfortunately, the exhilaration of the moment was short lived as he became increasingly aware of the turbulent waves and violent wind around him and he took his eyes off of Christ and began to sink.  Jesus, of course, lifted him up out of the water and they made their way back to the boat.  Peter’s water walking expedition, although not perfect, was a one of a kind experience, and I’m sure he wouldn’t trade it in for the world.

What step of faith is Jesus asking you to take?  You won’t be perfect and you’ll probably have some missteps along the way, but what would you rather go through life as?  A passenger on a sinking boat, or a water walking disciple of Jesus Christ…the choice is yours if you’re willing to take the first step!
