Taking God At His Word
It is unfortunate but many, if not a majority, of modern day Christians are selective in their following and even believing of some sections of Scripture. We say things like “I believe the whole Bible”, but when God’s Word points out an area, a belief, or an action that we don’t like we tend to relegate it to a culture issue or a debatable area. Why is this? Better yet, what are the consequences of reading the Bible this way?
First, where do you stop? If one section of the Bible is up for debate, then why not all of it? In fact, logic tells us that if we doubt any of it, we in actuality leave all of it in the cloud of doubt. As one of my professors used to say, “If any of it’s a lie, then all of it’s a lie!”
Second, each generation progressively slides down the proverbial “slippery slope”. Once the door of doubt and disbelief is opened it will never be satisfied until it wedges itself and opens the door to full capacity. The one and only solution? Slam the door shut as hard as you can!
Are there some things in the Bible that make me uncomfortable, because they confront my behaviors? You better believe it! But then I remind myself, God didn’t call me to a comfortable life, he called me to a holy life. So, I shout this with all of my blogosphere volume, “I believe the Bible completely from Genesis to Revelation!”
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (nlt)
