Of Chickens and Turkeys!

Have you ever wondered why a spineless individual is called a chicken? Or why a person who does sneaky, underhanded, or just dumb things is called a turkey?

As we close in on Thanksgiving these little euphemisms have got me wondering. So, I did a little research. Chickens, primarily hens, apparently are notorious for their lack of bravery and are easily scared, a stigma that was reinforced with the children’s story of Chicken Little. The turkey has been historically known as a very dull or not to smart animal that is often ruled by impulses that don’t usually end up in the poor bids best interest. Of course, over the years both of these beliefs about these birds have been stretched beyond truth, but the reality is these birds have a pretty bad reputation.
What’s your reputation like these days? Have you been acting like a chicken or a turkey lately?
Prov 22:1 – Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.
Prov 24:8-9 – A person who plans evil will get a reputation as a troublemaker. The schemes of a fool are sinful; everyone detests a mocker.
Prov 25:10 – Others may accuse you of gossip, and you will never regain your good reputation.
