Least of These

‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:45

As we grow in our influence and affluence, we are commanded by God to not forget those less blessed than we are. In fact, James the half brother of Christ says that watching out for “…widows and orphans…” is what true religion is all about. I think Solomon says it best as recounts the instructions that his mother gave him in childhood:

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy. – Proverbs 31:8,9

When was the last time that you made a conscious effort to defend or speak up for those who could not do it for themselves? Be on the look out this week so that you can express the compassion, the care, and the comfort of Christ to those who need it most, “…the least of these…”.
