Following The Spirit’s Lead
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. – Galatians 5:25
A feeling…
A random thought…
A push…
A sense of someone guiding you…
These and many more other expressions I, and many others I have talked to, have used to describe when they knew that the Holy Spirit was guiding them to do something. But, how do you know when it’s the Holy Spirit and not the leftover sausage pizza you ate at midnight last night?
First, the Holy Spirit will NEVER lead you to do anything contrary to Scripture!
Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God. – 2 Peter 1:20-21
Second, the Holy Spirit ALWAYS seeks to bring glory to the Father!
Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound—May the glory of the LORD be praised in his dwelling-place! – Ezekiel 3:12
Third, the Holy Spirit SOMETIMES will ask you to do things contrary to your thinking!
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. - 1 Corinthians 2:13-14
Fourth, the Holy Spirit will OFTEN lead you outside your realm of comfort and desire!
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. – Matthew 4:1
So, if you get one of those “leadings” this week, go over these simple things. If it seems to fit, take a step of faith, see what God will do! If it fails the test, just take some Pepto…
