Eyes Forward!

Yesterday I used this verse to describe the type of “visionary” discipline it will take for you to guard your eyes:

Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left… – Proverbs 2:25-27
Every day we are bombarded with tempting distractions, things that scream and holler for our attention and our focus. To be able to be successful in your walk with Christ, and consequently in life, you must have the ability to intentionally ignore diversions.

Now, I love watching action movies, probably like every other guy on the planet. And in action movies when the good guys are trying to sneak into the bad guys camp, or house, or compound, inevitably the main character will look to his sidekick and say…”Create a diversion and I’ll slip in the back”. The idea is to get the guards looking the other way so that an intruder can sneak in unnoticed and cause havoc.

The same is true for the diversions in our daily life. They are being thrown our way at increasingly higher rate of speed and it can become practically impossible to ignore them all. Unless of course you have the discipline of the Buckingham Palace Guards. These men have been trained to, yep you guessed it, fix their eyes on certain objects and totally ignore those things that could be potential distractions. They are disciplined this way because they protect England’s most precious possession, the Royal family. If a guard is found out to have allowed something to distract him he is almost certainly dismissed from his duties, and usually can never get back into this prized unit.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we need to learn to ignore the distractions and diversions that this life has to offer because we are protecting God’s most prized possession…us!
